  3. state of California, USA. Two sections of the
  4. Earth's crust meet at the San Andreas fault,
  5. and friction is created as the coastal
  6. Pacific plate moves NW, rubbing against the
  7. American continental plate, which is moving
  8. slowly SE. The relative movement is only
  9. about 5 cm/2 in a year, which means that Los
  10. Angeles will reach San Francisco's latitude
  11. in 10 million years. The friction caused by
  12. this tectonic movement gives rise to periodic
  13. earthquakes.
